What should you be looking when choosing between cheese of the month clubs?

Here are some guidelines. Most clubs of the month will let you choose between a gift subscription or a subscription for yourself. If it is for yourself, check the types of cheeses which will be supplied over the course of your subscription. If you are setting up membership of a cheese of the month club as a gift, you should be sure the recipient will actually enjoy the kind of cheeses on offer.

Most cheese of the month clubs offer hard-to-find cheeses, different to the ones which are commonly available in stores. They are usually selected by cheese experts, and may come from all over the world.

What is sent every month will vary, but usually includes a selection of different cheeses. Part of the idea is to allow you (or the person you have bought the membership for) to experience a variety of cheeses and to identify ones that you really like. Usually, you will not be able to select the cheeses you want, but will be able to enjoy the variety of the selections provided.

Many of the cheeses sent will be 'craftsman' or 'artisan' cheeses made by specialist cheesemakers in small batches, often using traditional methods.

Sometimes, rather than getting a batch of cheeses every month you can opt for seasonal cheeses, which are send close to the time the cheeses are made, or when they have reached optimum maturity.

Memberships for cheese of the month clubs are usually for periods of three months or more.
